"...every industrial town struggling to find its way in a new age..."
Lost In Middle America (and what happened next) (PBS)
Lima, Ohio was once the epitome of industrial America. Located in northwestern Ohio its economy was fueled by the manufacturing of such things as locomotives, tanks, trucks, cranes, automobile and airplane parts, cigars, neon signs, steel and the refining of oil. It seemed insulated against economic disaster.
But one by one Lima's industries fell, reflecting the crisis that created what become known as the Rust Belt. Lima's story is not unique. It is reflective of similar crisis that have affected towns and communities throughout the U.S. In the mid-1990's Lima embarked on an ambitious three-part plan to reverse it's economic and social slide. The documentary examines that plan and whether it worked and what other communities can learn from Lima's urban redevelopment. It's narrated by actor Hal Holbrook, an Ohio native.
