"Perhaps just as important, Beyond the Gridiron attempts to set Hayes' life in historical context, showing how his experiences shaped his outlook and how events around him affected his career. (It is) far more than a recitation of sports highlights and vintage football footage. (The producers) take a cleareyed look at Hayes' life."

Beyond the Gridiron : The Life and Times of Woody Hayes

Crouse Entertainment Group and The Duncan Group are pleased to announce that Beyond the Gridiron: The Life and Times of Woody Hayes is currently airing on Public Broadcasting. The documentary is the most comprehensive documentary ever done on the life of Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes. Advance copies of the documentary may now be purchased.

Beyond the Gridiron: The Life and Times of Woody Hayes is a fascinating profile of one of the most gifted and complex coaches of the 20th century. Woody Hayes enjoyed a long and acclaimed career as the head football coach of the Ohio State University Buckeyes. This biographical account provides an in-depth look at Hayes' life on and off the field, as well as the times by which Woody Hayes was influenced. "The documentary will give viewers an inside look at a man whom many consider one of the greatest college football coach of all time. But the documentary is far from a highlights film and provide insights into Hayes' politics, values and influences," says Director Chip Duncan of the Duncan Group.

Executive Producer, David Crouse, began attending OSU football games with his father at a very young age. He grew up in Lima, Ohio located 90 miles northwest of Columbus. "I was struck by how little was really known about Woody. I mean, after all, the public's impression of Woody is very one-dimensional and it revolves around one game and the punch. What I found was a much greater depth to the man and the extraordinary impact he had on his players and the state of Ohio."

The show features interviews with current OSU head football coach Jim Tressel, golfing legend and OSU alumnus Jack Nicklaus, two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin of Ohio State, and former players Greg Lashutka, Rex Kern, Daryl Sanders, and Alan Natali author of Woody's Boys.

Also interviewed was former Michigan head football coach Bo Schembechler. Bo played for Woody at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and then became an assistant coach for Hayes. When Bo was named head football coach at Michigan in 1969 it began what many would call the greatest rivalry in college football. "Bo was another great interview," added Crouse. "What struck me is that both of these men were fierce, and I mean fierce, competitors. Yet off the field they were remarkably close friends."

"Thanks to a top notch research team, we're able to place Coach Hayes in the context of history including the use of extraordinary archival footage," says Director Chip Duncan. Adds Writer/Producer Alison Rostankowski, "Viewing Coach Hayes as a man of the times will help fans and viewers alike in understanding the complexities and controversies that haunt the legend of a man whom many consider among the greatest college football coaches of all time."

The documentary was underwritten, in part, by John H. McConnell, The Columbus Dispatch, and The Davis Family.
